Curtis and The Old Time Strings was formed by Curtis Hicks in the mid-80’s, the group inspired by a jam session that took place at Charlie Louvin’s festival on Sand Mountain in Alabama. There in Henagar Curtis met “Peanut” Faircloth, who went onto become the historical narrator on the Southern Belle in 1988, a year before this recording. Peanut had a career as a well-known disc-jockey, being one of the country’s first for country music. Hicks and Faircloth went onto make music together for two decades, soon adding Jim “Butterbean” Shannon to the mix. Faircloth is credited as being a zany DJ and songwriter for the group.
