Gregg Groovy And The Greaseball Band- Caught In The Act

This record was purchased from Chattanooga collector John Suggs in February of 2025. Recorded live at the now-defunct Wooden Nickel in Chattanooga June 13th & 14th, 1975. This group was formed by Jimmy Tawater who is a member of the Chattanooga Music Hall of Fame. Jimmy toured extensively, at points with the likes of Little Richard and Leon Russell. 50’s themed bands and acts were popular in the 70’s, but Gregg Groovy And The Greaseball Band were said to be a wild exception from the norm. The goofy ensemble donned purposely wacky and eccentric outfits when performing hits from the 50’s and 60’s, touring through Tennessee, Mississippi, and Virginia.

This record is over fifty years old upon digitization and remains a relic of what Chattanooga nightlife and local bands were like half a century ago. Jimmy has been active in the Chattanooga well into the 2000’s, joining and starting different groups after this satirical group from the 70’s. Liner notes and PDF scan are available as well. Available below and on YouTube. There is an old video performance of Jimmy performing songs from the 50’s in his usual style directly below the album on this page.
